Turn Back Time With 80s Cardboard Standups For Your Theme Party

Written on January 4, 2012 by admin

80′s themed parties are still all the rage in many quarters of the country, particularly with younger hipster crowds looking to relive an era that passed while they were in diapers. However decorating for the party is always difficult, but much easier if you incorporate cardboard standups of classic 1980s figures into the planning. For most younger crowds the glam, the grit, and the lights are only part of the appeal of hosting an 80s themed party, the rest comes with remembering childhood figures and immersing themselves with classic icons of the era while they get down to Michael Jackson music and horrible beers. What could fit in this theme better than incorporating the very icons that they are celebrating into the party as well?

In planning for a proper 1980s themed party it is important to get the atmosphere of the event down before your guests ever arrive. Put up lots of movie posters from popular movies of the era (The Goonies, Terminator, and Thriller are always a good start), and make sure to string up brightly colored streamers around the room. If you have access to a projector it might be worth putting together videos of Nintendo games and Madonna or Michael Jackson clips to project on the wall while party goers get down. In fact, you can take that a step further by getting life sized cardboard standups of popular celebrities like Jackson to put in corners or up on stage. Adding a couple of “real live” 80s stars to the mix will go a long way toward turning back the clock a decade or two.

Next make sure that all of your guests know that they need to dress the part. Jean jackets, legwarmers, crazy hair and all. The crazier the outfit the better! Compliment their costumes by playing lots of 80s techno, pop and rock music to get the blood flowing and start the festivities. You can even include some retro games for your guests to play, or simply set up an old pinball machine or Nintendo for people to rock out on.
